The motorcycle driving license is divided into three classes, where the difference between the different classes lies in the engine power.

Do I need a basic traffic course?

MC Theory Course is mandatory for everyone who will drive in classes A and A2. You must have completed a basic traffic course or be over 25 years of age to participate.

If you already have a car driver's license, a basic traffic course is not necessary, and you can start straight away with the basic training, which starts with the 3-hour MC Course.

Step 1. MC course

Before you start the practical training, you must take 3 hours of theoretical training at a driving school. Here you will learn about, among other things:

  • What riding a motorcycle involves
  • How to avoid accidents
  • Mandatory safety equipment and motorcycle clothing

It is the same basic course that is taken in classes A2 and A, and you only need to take the course once. This means that if, for example, you have a driving license in class A1 and then take training for class A2, you do not need to take this course again.

Step 2. Basic training

In this step you will learn about the motorcycle, motorcycle riding and how to use the motorcycle in a purely technical way. The number of driving lessons you take must be adapted to your needs and how much you practice driving privately. It is important to reach the goal for the stage. Through practice driving, privately or at a traffic school, in this step you will learn:

  • How to get ready to drive
  • Starting and stopping
  • Shifting gears and crawling
  • Stearing, accelerating and braking
  • Safety control

Towards the end of step 2, you will complete a level assessment. You and your teacher will together assess whether you have good enough skills to start step 3.

Step 3. Driving in traffic

In this step you will learn to drive independently in varied traffic. The number of driving lessons you will take must be adapted to your needs and how much you practice driving privately. It is important to reach the goal for the stage. Among other things, you will learn about:

  • The motorcycle's handling characteristics
  • Driving technique
  • Safe driving in different traffic environments
  • Assessing your own driving skills

Towards the end of the training in this step, you will complete 4 hours of traffic safety training. Here you will learn how to drive safely in traffic, interact with other road users and choose low-risk driving methods. Towards the end of this step, you and your teacher will together assess whether you have good enough skills to start step 4.

Step 4. Final Training

You are now nearing the end of your training and it would be worthwhile to apply for a driving licence. This step ends with you passing the theory test, and in order to take this test your application for a driving licence must be approved. We can help you if you have any questions about the application process. The aim of the final training is to ensure that you are a safe driver who drives responsibly and is able to interact well with other road users.

As part of this step, you will complete a five-hour road safety course. This will take place in normal traffic and will teach you:

  • Planning a long motorcycle ride
  • To drive clearly, safely and efficiently in varied road and traffic environments
  • Be aware of how you can improve as a motorcyclist, even after you have obtained your driving licence

Step 5. Theory test

Before you can register for the driving test, you must pass the theory test. You take the theory test at your nearest traffic station and it is not necessary to book an appointment in advance. As mentioned, it is important that you apply for a driving license before you show up for the theory test.

When you arrive, you must present valid identification and pay for the theory test on site. Please note that some traffic stations may have limited opening hours for theory tests. The test is answered on a PC and you will receive the result immediately. A passed theory test is valid for driving for three years.

Step 6. Driving Exam

For motorbikes, the driving exam takes 65 minutes. You must provide your own vehicle to use during the run-in. Most people rent a vehicle from the traffic school they are a student at.

The training consists of two parts: a skills test with safety check and a traffic test.

Part 1 is a skills test that consists of a safety check where you are given one task to solve practically.

After the safety check, you will be given five tasks to solve in the skills test:

  • Crawling and balance
  • Turning technique
  • Effective braking
  • Evasion
  • Braking in corners

These are exercises that are carried out in a closed area. See more about the tasks here

Part 2 is the traffic test which consists of driving in varied traffic and road conditions.

You must remember this when you show up for the driving exam:

  • Valid ID
  • Payment can be made in advance on Din side, or upon arrival. Remember that it is cheaper to pay online.

CONVERSION A1-A2 AND A2 -A

Students who wish to extend from class A1 to A2 have two options. In a letter from the Norwegian Roads Administration to ATL, the two options are explained as follows: Option 1: Extension from class A1 to A2 without a practical test according to the Traffic Training Regulations Section 9-21.

Students who have had a driving license in class A1 for 2 years can, based on three mandatory courses, acquire a driving license in class A2 without having to take a practical test. The courses can be started at the earliest when the student has had a driving license in class A1 for one year.

The three mandatory courses to be completed are:

  • Step 3: Mandatory course when expanding from class A1 to A2 (2 hours)
  • Step 3: Safety course in precise driving techniques - class A2 and A (4 hours)
  • Step 4: Road safety course class A2 (5 hours)

Driving license in category A2 based on 2 years of driving license in category A and mandatory training is in line with Directive 2006/126/EU Annex VI. The mandatory training at stages 3 and 4 consists of:
